Lesson 2: Break the Pattern

Dry Bones Men’s Ministry | Pornography | October 5, 2026 | Lesson version 1.0

Estimated study time 8–9 minutes including reflection

1. The Question

What are you still keeping within reach that you already know leads you back?

You know the app. You know the account. You know the hour, the room, and the routine.

Yet you keep entering the same situation and hoping this time will end differently.

At some point, you must stop treating a predictable pattern as a surprise.

2. Main Scripture

Romans 13:14 KJV

But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

To make provision means to prepare for or supply something.

Paul tells believers to live under Christ’s rule and stop supplying opportunities for sinful desires.

If you keep arranging easy access to what draws you into sin, you are making provision for it—even while saying you want freedom.

3. Biblical Teaching

Take Jesus seriously about removing what leads you into sin

Matthew 5:29 KJV

And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Jesus uses forceful imagery to show the seriousness of sin. He is not instructing you to injure yourself. He is calling you to deal decisively with what leads you into it.

For you, that may mean deleting an account, unfollowing people, changing where you use your phone, or giving up a device routine you have defended.

The issue is not whether a phone or an app is sinful in itself. The issue is what you keep using it to do.

If convenience keeps winning over obedience, be honest about what you are choosing.

Leave before the temptation becomes a negotiation

2 Timothy 2:22 KJV

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Flee means get away. Charity means love.

Paul does not tell Timothy to remain near temptation and prove his strength. He tells him to flee and pursue what is good with other believers.

Do not wait until you have spent twenty minutes bargaining with yourself.

When the pattern begins, close the screen. Stand up. Leave the room. Call someone.

The moment you recognize temptation is the moment to act.

Find the choices that happen before the final choice

Pornography use may be preceded by a familiar sequence:

You stay up alone. You begin scrolling. You follow something suggestive. You tell yourself it is not technically pornography. You keep going.

The final click matters. So do the choices that brought you there.

Ask yourself:

  • When does this usually happen?
  • What do I do immediately beforehand?
  • What feeling am I trying to escape?
  • Where could I interrupt the pattern earlier?

Understanding the pattern gives you a place to act. It does not excuse the sin.

Replace the routine with obedience

  • chart (1)

    Galatians 5:16 KJV

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Walking in the Spirit means living under the Holy Spirit’s direction rather than surrendering to sinful desires.

You need more than an empty evening and a promise to behave.

Use that time deliberately. Read Scripture. Pray honestly. Spend time with others. Complete neglected responsibilities. Build a healthier bedtime routine.

These activities do not purchase God’s favor. They are practical ways to pursue obedience instead of repeatedly feeding the old habit.

4. What This Means for You

Write down the pattern you already recognize.

Then make a specific plan:

“When I notice ________, I will immediately ________ and contact ________.”

For example:

“When I start scrolling alone late at night, I will put my phone outside the bedroom and contact the brother helping me.”

Pray for strength and make the change. Depending on God is consistent with taking responsibility for what you can remove.

5. Don’t Miss This

A boundary cannot change your heart by itself. But refusing a needed boundary can reveal what you are unwilling to surrender.

6. Think About It

  • 1 What access point have you repeatedly refused to remove?
  • 2 Where does your usual pattern begin?
  • 3 What inconvenience would obedience require this week?

Do not answer with what another man should do. Name your next step.

7. Prayer

Father, show me where I have been making room for sin. Forgive me for keeping access while asking You to change the outcome. Help me walk by Your Spirit, leave temptation early, and follow through on the changes I need to make. Amen.

8. Your Mission Today

Remove one known access point and change one vulnerable routine.

Make both changes today. Tell your accountability partner exactly what you changed so he can follow up.
